Be part of a world record peace attempt!

7 Septembre 2012

This year WAGGGS is teaming up with Peace One Day to mark the International Day of Peace on 21 September.

Peace One Day led the initiative to establish the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence. This was unanimously adopted by the United Nations as 21 September – Peace Day. Since then Peace One Day has been calling on individuals worldwide to work towards a day of ceasefire and non-violence.

Peace One Day has proved over the last years that a day of peace can be successful. On Peace Day 2008 the UN Department for Safety and Security announced a 70% reduction in violent incidents in Afghanistan. Peace agreements in Afghanistan resulted in 4.5 million children being vaccinated against polio.

As part of the Global Truce 2012 WAGGGS wants Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to take action to create a world of peace. A world without violence. We hope that this year’s Peace Day will see the largest global reduction of violence ever recorded on one day. The Global Truce 2012 hopes to make a world record for the largest ever gathering of individuals in the name of peace. And we want Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to be a part of this record attempt.

To be part of this world record you need to do two easy actions:

  1. Plan and stage an event for Peace Day. The WAGGGS’ Peace Day activity sheet has lots of activities that you can do to take action.
  2. Tell WAGGGS about your event by filling in this simple form so your action can be counted.

One day without violence is the stepping stone to a future without violence.

Stop the Violence Film

Do you want to appear in a film that will broadcasted to thousands on Peace Day? If so, grab a camera and film you and your friends talking about violence against girls and the role girls and young women can play in ending it.

WAGGGS is creating a special film for the day and we want to feature you in the film. Send your film submission to stoptheviolence@wagggsworld.org by Monday 17 September 2012.
