A Forum on People's Food Sovereignty was held in Rome from 13 to 17 November 2009. Alice Ravaoarimanana, member of Association des Guides de Madagascar was privileged to attend this forum as a WAGGGS representative along with Kate Buchanan and Maria Volodina from WAGGGS.

This forum was organized by the Centro Internazionale Crocevia through the Civil Society Organizations Forum run in parallel to the World Food Summit on Food Security, FAO. More than 180 countries attended this forum, with 646 delegates, 60% of whom were women. A presentation on the global action of the Civil Society Organizations and social movements from 1996 to 2009 was made by Antonio Onorati (International Focal Point, International Planning Committee).

Participants were divided into 3 caucuses - Women, Indigeneous people, Youth and Working Groups on the Alliances. WAGGGS was represented on the youth caucus by Kate and on the Women's caucus by Alice and Maria. The following themes were discussed by each group : Who decides food politics, Who controls resources for food production, How is food produced, Who has access and needs to have access to food.

The closing ceremony included a plenary discussion and the adoption of the final declaration of future strategies to be taken. The final declaration was presented on 18 November to the government representatives from each country meeting in Rome at the FAO headquarters.

Alice, who is a member of the community development team of her association, writes that attending this forum "Gave me an opportunity to share the experiences of the Fanilo in the promotion of rural community life and specifically rural women who meet together as villages around the Sahafanilo Centre. This centre offers training in the form of rice growing, fish breeding, bee keeping and biological fertilizer. To perpetuate our community development activity, this forum allowed me to be in contact with organizations who have worked for a number of years with other projects and who already have extensive experience and ideas. Some good relationships were forged following the contacts made which will support the work of the Fanilo."
