In response to the earthquake in Sichuan the Hong Kong Girl Guides Association organized a charity concert in August 2008. They raised about 2 million HK Dollars to support the affected regions and the victims. Girl Guides were also encouraged to make knitted scarves and to collect stationery for the victims.

A service project in Sichuan was subsequently organized from 20 to 23 December 2008 with more than 100 participants including 70 Girl Guides, 18 Guiders and adult leaders, and 14 non-uniformed members. A supporting team with vice-President, Sir David Akers-Jones GBM JP, and Chief Commissioner, Mrs Delia Pei BBS JP, also joined the visiting group.

During the four-day visit, participants visited the Yongxing Relief Community at Mianyang, an orphanage in Zitong County, Beichuan Secondary School, Leigu Town Lower-secondary School, and the Beichuan Hope School. Members distributed 3,300 jackets, 2,000 quilts, more than 6,000 knitted scarves, 460 trousers, 10 sets reference books, and boxes of stationery. Another 2,500 jackets and 500 quilts were prepared for them before the Chinese New Year.

An exchange programme was also arranged for Girl Guides and students in Beichuan Secondary School and Leigu Town Lower-secondary School. Although the programme was brief, Girl Guides felt that the students were tough, optimistic, vigorous, contented - elements that girls from Hong Kong should learn.

In addition to this service project, the Association also committed a donation to a bridge project in Sichuan which is expected to be completed by the end of August 2009. Twenty-five Girl Guides will be recruited to participate in the construction work.
