UN Millennium Development Goals

One of the UN’s central mandates is the promotion of higher standards of living, full employment, and conditions of economic and social progress and development. Most of the UN’s work is devoted to accomplishing this, under the belief that eradicating poverty and improving the well-being of people everywhere are necessary steps in creating conditions for lasting world peace.
At the Millennium Summit in September 2000, world leaders adopted eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) aimed at:
- eradicating extreme poverty and hunger
- achieving universal primary education
- promoting gender equality and empowering women
- reducing child mortality
- improving maternal health
- combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
- ensuring environmental sustainability.
- developing a global partnership for development.
The Goals included a set of measurable targets to be achieved by the year 2015. Among these are:
- cutting in half the proportion of those who earn less than a dollar a day;
- achieving universal primary education;
- eliminating gender disparity at all levels of education;
- dramatically reducing child mortality while increasing maternal health.
All 191 Member States of the United Nations have pledged to meet these goals.

What is WAGGGS doing on the MDGs?
WAGGGS works closely with the UN and many of its agencies. All of WAGGGS’ projects and programmes directly tie in with the MDGs: the AIDS Badge curriculum, our work on raising awareness on the issue of adolescent pregnancy and empowering girls and young women and leadership training for example.Find out more about WAGGGS’ contribution to global action days.
