For my Silver Award Project I worked over 180 service hours raising donations for the Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics(SORCC). It is a program that helps rehabilitate homeless veterans back into a working society as funtional people. The SORCC teaches these veterans how to budget, shop, pay bills, and hold a job. They help homeless veterans get their own permanent homes and rely on donations to furnish these homes. For my Silver, I raised donations for a year for these veterans in need. I raised supplies and recycled cans for money. I donated all of these necessities to the SORCC. I made a huge impact on the lives of some very deserving men and women. My donations will help clothe, feed, and furnish a veteran in their new house. I am grateful for all of the sacrifices that these veterans have made for our country, and I feel lucky to be able to give back some freedom to a veteran that fought for mine.

For my Silver Award Project I planted trees at Parkview Elementary with the help of my troop, family, friends and volunteers from our local high school. Our troop went on a Breathe Journey discovering how trees help us breathe and beautify the world. Parkview Elementary has a large back lot close to a major road with a few businesses along the fence line. The trees will provide nice scenery for the kids and teachers who have to use the field. With the help of my troop, we will continue to take care of the trees until they take to the soil. It was a lot of hard work looking for suitable trees, making phone calls to our local utility companies to make sure we could dig along the fence line and making fliers to make our community aware of our project and asking for their involvement. It was a lot of fun and our trees will continue to beautify the school and help keep our air clean.

I have been in scouts for 8 years. I am a cadette scout and I am just finishing my Silver Award. For my project I created a sign about Sargassum (seaweed) to put in the Galveston State Park. It tells about Sargassum and how its good for the ocean. When people want to get rid of it, they are destroying homes for little animals that live in the ocean, wothout relizing it. The park ranger was exstatic when he recieved the sign because of all the tourist complaints about Sagassum. This way, the sign will continue to educate people about Sargassum and how it is a wonderful thing.

For my silver award, i visited a maternity hospital and distributed 150 baby dresses,50 baby covering sheets among the poorest women. It's something quite in explicable to see them happy. I'm glad i did that cause they didn't even have material to hold the child, after they were born.

For my silver award project I built ten bluebird houses for a nearby park. I had fun making them even though I ran into a few challenges. I had to learn how to use different kinds of tools. I even had to work with some metal. I loved seeing them all lined up and ready to go on the bluebird real-estate market. But first, of course, they would have to be hammered into the ground.
One of the best parts of this project was the knowledge that I was helping the birds. I’m very glad that I was able to supply a suitable home for several bluebird families. The park was very grateful to have the extra houses for bluebirds. Much of the birds’ habitats have been destroyed over the years with so many orchards and trees being chopped down, so it felt good to give them a safe home. To make the new homes extra safe, I added snake and raccoon guards, but hopefully they won’t need to be used often.
With the ten houses I made the park now has twenty-six houses. I even saw a few bluebirds peaking into the new houses after I installed them.

During spring break, I worked on my Silver Award at a Girl Scout camp; Camp Strawberry. It’s a camp for non-girl scouts from ages 5-12, and I made a bunch of new friends. A few weeks before camp started, I began thinking of science experiments to run for those girls. Science was the center I ran. After preparing a schedule, I asked a lot of stores for any donations they could give to help make the science center a success. I did buy a few of the supplies myself though. Throughout camp, I learned many public speaking skills since I was interacting with kids all day. This will help me become a better leader and person overall. I learned that it is important to keep a time log to keep track of how much time you spent preparing, and actually doing your Silver Award. Otherwise some of your hours may not be accounted for. By saying the Girl Scout Promise, one is promising to help the country and its people at all times. Camp Strawberry gave me a chance to do just that. The Girl Scout Law says to be “friendly and helpful, considerate and caring…” working with younger kids allowed me to show others that I am a kind and contributive individual. This was a great experience and I hope you can get an opportunity like this as well.

I'm a Girl Scout Cadette, and recently completed Silver Award. My inspiration came from very close to home. I live in a family that fosters children that have been taken from their families because of abuse/neglect, and brought into the care of the foster families like ours. I have been amazed at how strong some of these kids are, but also very saddened by their very difficult circumstances and how powerless they are to improve things. This inspired me to get involved, to take action, and to channel my time and energy into making a positive difference in the lives of these children.
I decided to focus my Silver Award on Reading. Many foster children come from families that lack the skills and tools to encourage their education, and therefore they can be quite far behind in their schoolwork. I've noticed in particular that many have never been encouraged to read or haven't had easy access to books, and therefore don't know the joys of reading. So I decided to organize a book drive and a Read-a-thon for the foster children of Cobb County, just north of Atlanta.
My project included working closely with the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) and the Cobb County Foster and Adoptive Parents Association (CCFAPA), both of which gave me good guidance and direct access to the hundreds of children in need. Over the past few months, I challenged the children to read more through a Read-a-thon, where the children earned prizes for participation and for reading the most in particular age categories. I also collected over 350 new and gently used books (for ages 0-13) from people in my community, and handed these out to foster children at a recent CCFAPA meeting. The reactions of children was incredible. They were so excited and happy to receive the books, and I'm certain that they were encouraged to read as a result.
I found my Silver Award project to be very empowering and rewarding, and I intend to make my Book Drive and Read-a-thon for foster children an annual event.

As a Cadette Scout, I decided to earn my Silver Award. I care about abandoned, vulnerable animals and former pets that have been left on the streets by their owners to fend for themselves and do not have a home to live in. I decided to find an organization that was in need of donations for animals such as these and collect those needed items. Through my research, I found an organization that fit my objective, the Humane Society of Cobb County. This group functions on a very tight budget and their needs are great. I took a leadership role by informing others (like my community, neighborhood, church, fellow scouts, businesses, and friends) of the dire situation and instructing and guiding them in the process of helping where the need is great. People often want to help, but they are not sure how. Working together, we can successfully accomplish bigger tasks. The amount of items I collected over a two month period was amazing. The reaction of the Humane Society when I delivered all the items on their wish list was terrific! They were so grateful. I am hoping this message will be passed from person to person with an impact far beyond my hometown.

Our team is almost completed with our Silver Award Project. The project we chose to do was getting the younger generation aware of making wise money decisions for the future. We were able to pursue our take action project by running programs at our public library for children and talking with adults about the community issue. So far, we have made a positive impact on the community that is sure to last in their futures.

For my silver award I chose to build a small library shelf for the afrer school daycare my little siblings attend. The after school daycare my little siblings attend is called Keyspot. Keyspot had three bookshelves but they were all falling apart and couldn't hold all the books. As I am horrible at building anything, I hired a contractor to build the shelf for me. It is big enough to hold all the books Keyspot has and supports all the weight of the books without falling apart. Now the kids can sit on the couch and read wihtout any worries. Without this book shelf, they wouldn't have books. This project showed me how fun it is to help out others with just a small little thing.

For my Girl Scout Gold Award project I created a program entitled "Dancing With the Teens" that promoted physical fitness through dance and educated teens about healthy eating habits. I worked with the local Boys and Girls club and members of my community and taught hip-hop classes and nutritional workshops in order to help combat child obesity. I created a hip-hop moves DVD and a healthy eating habits book filled with lesson plans and activies for future use. I greatly enjoyed this project and encourage you to pursue your gold award!

For my gold award, I focused on childhood obesity. I got involved with Junior League and gathered up fun recipes and healthy recipes that children can get involved in . I spoke at a day care that has 4-5 yr olds and spoke to parents about eating nutritional foods and spreading awareness . I also handed out seeds for the kiddos to grow their own garden and show them they can eat what they grow. I had gymnastic demonstrations to show they can get involved in sports to get exercise .I am hoping to keep this going at this day care , and that it can be picked up by other day cares down the line.

Hi, I am a cadette and I just completed my siliver award. My partner and I decided to build birdhouses and bird feeders for the birds in our community. Since there is a lot of new housing in my community, birds are losing their homes and food sources. Birds are very necessary for the ecosystem.
We also lead a workshop about how to make birdhouses and bird feeders for younger girls. We then donated them to schools in my community. We helped not only the birds, but our schools by beautifying their propery. Some teachers will be using the bird houses in their curriculum teaching about the ecosytem and birds.
My partner and I also learned how to improve our own personal leadership and organizatgional skills. We led a workshop of over 60 girls that lasted almost two days! We had to organize the activities, the schedule, and even the leaders!
My project can be recreated in your commuinity or anywhere in the world!
Brianna Swinderma - 14 July 2012 - 6.13AM (GMT)
Hi, my name is Brianna Swinderman and i live in New Mexico and am part of the Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails Council. I am 16 and have been in Girl Scouts 11 years. I have done my Silver Award and am working on my Gold Award. My project is called Bags of Hope. This is a project near and dear to my heart. All throughout my life I have heard and seen the suffering of foster kids and Domestic Violence victims. This is why I am starting this project of collecting new and gently used suitcases and duffel bags. My Mission is to ensure that Foster children and Domestic Violence victims can leave danger with their belongings in tact. Most of the time they have to leave with their belongings in trash bags. They deserve more dignity than that. That is why I chose to start this project.
My goal is to obtain 1OOO or more.
I am doing this in hopes of bettering the lives of these victims, to better my community and to support this issue, and of achieving my Girl Scout Gold Award. Got to my website for more information... www.bagsofhope.yolasite.com

I am a cadette girl scout and I just finished my silver award. I hosted a senior sock hop for the retirement community because I thought we should bring back old memories for them and teach young girls now how it was back then. Everyone enjoyed it and we learned what life was like for them and some of them learned some of their family tree. They learned what their grandparents or great grandparents did for fun. I also learned a lot of things I didn't know before. WE learned dance moves and some old history. I think it was important that the young girls learned what life was like back then, and that the people there who don't get out much learned what it was like now. It brought back old memories for them and happier times so they could forget about the state they were in now. I had a lot of fun doing this project, and I am looking forward to my Gold Award!
Katie and Rhianna - 25 March 2012 - 3.59AM (GMT)
This year my friend Rhianna and I finished our Silver Award. Gabriel Davies Tavern, a historical site in our town, attracts many mosquitoes(which ruins woodwork and bothers guests) and bats have lived in the attic. We raised money to buy, paint, and have Public Works install two bat houses on the property. We also prepared another bat house in case one gets damaged, created pamphlets to hand out at the Tavern, and spoke to a younger troop about the importance of bats. Not only was this project a lot of fun, but we got to learn more about bats and the history of the Tavern.

For my Silver Award, I painted signs for the snowmobile trails in northern MN. This project helped with trail safety as many signs were broken, hard to read,or had false/expired information. I worked with the local snowmobile club for this project. One of the members would make the signs then I would sand, paint, and finish them.I completed thirty signs in all. The best part was when I got to ride on the trails to put up the trail signs. When I hung up a new sign I had painted, I could really see the difference from the old signs. They were much easier to read. I'm glad that these new signs will be around for a long time. These signs will help snowmobilers to travel safely on the trails.

I have been a Girl Scout for years and now, finally, as a senior in high school I am in the final stages of completing my Girl Scout Gold Award Project. My project, “Teens and Healthy Choices,” addressed the issue of healthy living for teenagers in a busy lifestyle. My project was geared toward middle school students who were preparing for the numerous changes in high school. I surveyed students at three middle schools about how the food they ate and the amount of exercise and sleep they got. I used the data I obtained to create charts of their data, showing the students their eating, exercising, and sleep habits. The goal of my project was to inform the students about their choices and help them live healthier. I wanted to allow them to get regular healthy habits, which could continue, into high school. I provided my informational PowerPoint with the data and ended with a Jeopardy Game on what I had taught. At the end of my presentation, I handed out bags of donated food, reusable water bottles, plastic water bottles, and healthy snacks in food groups the students seemed to be lacking in. Thank you Girl Scouts and World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scout (WAGGGS) for inspiring me to take action in my community of tackling the problems of unhealthy eating. From my project, I have affirmed my love for science and healthy living. Next year in college, I will be pursuing nursing and helping others. Once again, thank you Girl Scouts! :)

For my Silver Award Project, I collected school supplies and monetary donations to help kids in my church. I helped seven people directly, and many more by stocking some things in our food pantry for others to use, and donating the leftover supplies to a local teacher. My Youth Pastor was even inspired to make this project an annual event! You'd be surprised how many people need help, even if they don't seem like it. I was so happy to help kids I knew and even some I didn't.

For our Silver Award project, we collected books from our community for a lending library for a transitional housing facility. We were looking for books for all ages from babies to teens to adults. We have started the collection with several hundred books. We posted to our friends on facebook to get more books, so that we can continue to replinish books that they would like to keep. They can borrow and return, trade or keep any book.
Many people in our area do not have easy access to books. We feel that books are of great importance to everyone's life and gives you the world.

For my Silver Award, I made ceramic angels for an army company (over 80 angels) that is overseas. I then attached a card saying "Where ever you go, What ever you do, May this angel watch over you!". I have already recived a request from another company overseas for their personnel, I am working on making them for them.

For my Silver Award project, I collected gently used backpacks from my school at the end of the school year. I then sorted and cleaned them, and delivered them to several local homeless shelters. To make my project sustainable, I also contacted other schools in my area, and had them do the collection as well. Once my project was finished, I gave these schools a plan on how to do the project again in the future. The homeless shelters really appreciated receiving the backpacks, even saying things like "They are like gold around here!" In addition, the shelters found that giving out backpacks was a great way to engage people, and the shelter workers could offer them services and help.
Sarah B - 24 September 2011 - 2.36AM (GMT)
For my Silver Award, I collected used backpacks from my elementary school at the end of the school year. I cleaned and sorted them, and they donated the backpacks to local homeless shelters. The people that these facilities help were able to use the backpacks to carry their belongings around with them, and they were extremely thankful that I thought of them. It was really easy to get 50+ hours, but it didn't seem like a lot because of how much I needed to do to finish my project.
Erin - 19 September 2011 - 2.28AM (GMT)
The intent of my silver award project was to help neglected and abandoned cats and dogs. I fostered kittens; volunteered at Forgotten Cats; educated young children of proper care for cats and dogs, and also the advantages of adopting from shelters. I collected donations and gave them to different animal rescues. We made cat toys, cat blankets, and dog treats.

For my silver award project, I built a bridge for the westlake council. I made it light weight and portable. I also made it wide enough so a wheelchair could cross. I routed the girl scout law onto the planks of my bridge for the finishing touch. The current bridge the girl scouts were using was big and bulky and wheelchairs could not cross it.

For my Silver Award Project, I set up a system of churches in the Attleboro Area Council of churches to collect, clean, disinfect, and then send luggage to the Attleboro Area Council of Churches Headqurters. Where Sue Smith, the Chairman of the Homes with a heart Foundation, would then use her contacts in the area to distribute them where they are most needed. I liked doing my Silver Award, but my advice to the girl scouts out there just starting their award would be to start early and keep it simple, you don't want to get swamped.
Troop 9135 - 28 August 2011 - 8.47PM (GMT)
Our troop, Troop 9135 in South Carolina, recently completed the activities for our Silver Award project, Learning Games for Growing Kids. We painted hop-scotch, four-square and other games onto the playground of a local elementary school. We also created fun learning games for young children to use over the summer, to prevent summer slide. We are so excited to earn our Silver Award!
Rebecca R - 26 August 2011 - 11.02PM (GMT)
For my silver award, I helped promote fencing by helping keep the local scholastic fencing league organized, refereeing youth, middle school and high school tournaments, and coaching fencing classes for younger kids. Some of the skills I learned were public speaking and making a good first impression on people. Those skills and many other important skills I learned during the project helped me to become a better leader and person.

I just finished my silver award, I actually did two projects about helping younger girls transition between different times in their lives. The first project I did was to organize a huge Bridging Ceremony for multiple levels of girl scouting in my service unit, and my other project was to create a sleepover with team-building games and a service project focusing on the theme which was starting middle school.
Rachel - 17 August 2011 - 10.12PM (GMT)
Hi! For my Silver Award project, another girl in my troop and I organized an event where Girl Scouts could come and earn all their bridging requirements then participate in a bridging ceremony. We paired troops together so that they would talk to an older troop and a younger troop then invited their families to come watch them as they bridged to their new Girl Scouting level. Also, I organized a badge workshop for Juniors to earn the "Healthy Relationships" badge. At the workshop, we played games together, discussed what being a good friend means, and how to have good relationships with everyone you know. My project was really fun to work on. Can't wait to earn my Gold!!!
Thanks:)

I am only a junior and our troop is small and comes from a small state were not know for much. But still i think girl scouting is a big deal for girls all over the world it helps buil character and confidence.
Our troop is working on a badge called every body every where. I think it is a great way to show how everybody everywhere is different and unique in there own way. People might make fun of you because your different but take a stand for what you believe in, do not let then push you around. Be unique in your own personal way.
Like i was saying earler our troop is small but i think all of us working together is something we can be proud of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Each December, my church goes to a rural area in Kentucky to deliver Christmas gifts to kids who live in poverty. For my Silver Award Project, I asked my church, family, and friends to donate toys and art supplies for the kids in Kentucky. Many of the kids are too poor to buy art supplies. I like creating art because it helps me express my feelings and reduce stress. I thought the kids in Appalachia would like this opportunity, too. We held a Christmas party in two different locations to distribute the gifts. We were able to help around 100 kids. The kids were so excited to receive their gifts.

I am an assistant Daisy Girl Scout leader, from Virginia Beach, VA, US. Also a Girl Scout before, I am amazed that this organization is as massive as it is. I think that finding this website has educated me on a lot that I was unaware of. I would love to learn more about the ways of all of the other guides in the world. This is a very useful website.

For my Silver Project the Cadettes in my troop all got together to redo the reunification rooms at Greater Hope Foundation. Greater Hope Foundation is a foster care agency that places kids with foster families, provides training for foster parents and supervises visitations in the reunification rooms. These rooms started out with plain white wall, some books missing covers and pages and old toys. We started by putting together a letter asking for donations and taking them to our local businesses. Once we collected donations we went shopping for supplies that we needed. We painted ABC’s and shapes on the walls of the younger kids room and cheerful sayings on the walls in the older kids room. We also got donations of toys and books which we placed in the rooms. In the lounge we painted a sky on the ceiling and hung a canvas of inspirational quotes on the wall along with some new end tables. In the end the rooms were a brighter more kid friendly and home like place to interact with their biological parents.

Someone with an addiction can't be forced to stop taking drugs. The first step is to find a support group in the area which can help your loved one and offer the right support for them.Therfore, this time we are taking action against substance abuse because we think encouragement and support makes the process much more bearable. Each year I have been in Girl Scouts I have gained new skills and wonderful experiences. I am now putting these skills into action by completing my Silver Award Project. My troop of four and I are creating a "Mix It Up" club for children with diabilities. It is once a week for six weeks. We will lead different activities each week including: arts and crafts, music and movement, cooking, games and puzzles, etc. Although the kids will be gaining skills and and experiences I know that I will have so much fun working with them.

For my Girl Scout Silver Award Project, I sponsored the organization Circle the City. Their main goal is to help the homeless of the Greater Phoenix area in Arizona. They provide medical care in a clinic setting to homeless people recently discharged form the hospital with nowhere else to go. As part of my project I circulated flyers about this organization and their needs. I spoke to many different groups and individuals to bring awareness to the community about this organization. This is not a topic that many people think about, and it really touched me to see the conditions of others in Phoenix. I was really glad that I could help, and to all of the Girl Scouts in Arizona, I recommend you supporting this organization. I know that it will touch your heart as it did mine.

Our silver award was based on the need to honor our nations symbol, the flag. We held a retirement ceremony and invited our neighborhood to it. We even held it on memorial day to honor all those who gave their lives to honor the flag. It was a good ceremony to do and we learned a lot about our nations past and how to honor it correctly. We also learned 50 hours is a lot bigger then it seems so plan ahead!
Rachel - 13 September 2010 - 2.22AM (GMT)
For our silver award, my troop and I designed and held a library program during the summer. The theme for the program had to involve water, so we created "Disney's Underwater Adventures". It was a four day program for preschoolers. Each day we did different activities such as Disney bingo, a craft to make a Disney underwater scene, and a Disney mural. The kids had fun and so did we!

Ever since I joined the Girl Scout movement back in 2001, it became a part of who I am today. I love the fact that in Girl Scouting, we have all the fun that we can have, meet different girls from various places AND at the same time be catalysts of change. It's the fact that we dare to make a change in the world and help not only our brothers and sisters who are in need but also our mother earth that I love this organization so much. And maybe this is not just an ordinary group, it's a tight-knit family that wherever you are in the world, there is that Girl Guide/Girl Scout who is a friend and a sister to you.
More power to WAGGGS and all its projects!

This website helps me to make the educational programs for my EFL children. I am always trying to make my lectures something more meaningful than just learning English as a foreign language in Japan.
I had been a girlscout and leader from 5th grade to the first year of college. However, since I went to graduate school, I did not have enough time for helping the scounting activities in my local troop, which is really sad because scounting is absolutely a part of my life.
Once I finish my PhD progamme, I hope I will come back to scouting and work on global as well as local activities with young scouts!
Cheers for all sisters!
Tomoko Uryu
