Experience in Peace Building

Contact

Burundi, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (Northen and Southern Kivu)

Description

My experience is in the management and implementation of a great project called "Amahoro-Amani", a project implemented by young people (scouts and guides and non scouts or non guides)in which those young people are educated in peace building and conflict resolution and in the fight against prejudices in their respective communities. Several Community Mediators sensitively contribute to peace through peace clubs.

Achievements

21,000 young people are now Ambassadors for Peace in the Great Lakes Region (Rwanda, Burundi and DRC) and we hope that they will be able to install an everlasting peace in the region. Through the Peace Caravan and the International Gathering which was organised during the 1st phase of the project, a great network of friends was established between the young people in the region but also between the region and the Northen Scouts and Guides who came for the 2 events.

We also achieved a great visibility for girl guiding in Burundi and in the region thanks to the Amahoro-Amani Project.

Challenges

The project is a very big one which requires a lot of work, concentration and money. It is also not very easy to undertake on voluntary basis with non scout and non guide young people as we do not always share the same values.

Advice

The advice I would like to give to other Girl Guides is that Peace is not a business of policians as we all used to think , but it is 1st of all "OUR OWN BUSINESS" . Peace Building should start from our own homes, schools, groups or workplace!! And if the 10 million of Girl Guides could embark for a world peace building project, we can change our actual World into a better one!
