Maldives Girl Guides In Need of Building and Funding Support

Entered on: 11 June 2009

Mariam Waheeda, Chief Commissioner of Maldives Girl Guide Association has said the Association desperately needs funding to implement the association's various programmes.

Speaking at the 2008 Annual General Assembly, she also expressed an urgent need for a suitable building to run the Association and provide training to Girl Guides. She said that due to lack of such space, various programmes were on halt. She noted the biggest obstacle to Maldivian Girl Guides taking part in various overseas programmes was a lack of adequate funding.

The Chief Commissioner highlighted the environmental protection programme as a huge success. She also noted that 609 members participated in various programmes conducted during the past year.

During the Annual General meeting warrants, long service awards, Asia Pacific Badge and certificates were distributed to Guiders and Commissioners for their service to the Movement. At the meeting, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Health and Family Ms. Mazeena Jameel spoke on ways they can protect children from sexual abuse. The annual report and budget report were read out. The guest of honour at the meeting was first lady, Chief Guide Laila Ali who was a Guide. She was the first patron to wear the uniform.
