World Thinking Day 2008 will focus on water
2 November 2007
World Thinking Day 2008 is just around the corner. The theme for 2008 is ‘Think about water’, focusing on water’s importance to health and on the issues of access to clean water and water conservation.
The World Thinking Day website has been updated with all the information you will need to prepare activities for younger and older members and to explore the issue of water.
The activities, downloadable from the website, are divided into three sub themes:
- Provide access to clean water
- Drink water for health
- Conserve water for the world.
Each contains practical ways to learn about water, ranging from keeping a personal water diary to testing types of water filters or holding competitions to reduce water use.
Why water?
Our bodies, which are nearly 70 per cent water, need water to stay healthy and function properly.
Clean water is also necessary for hygiene and personal needs as well as for cooking and cleaning our homes and schools. However, over one billion people – one-sixth of the world’s population - lack easy access to safe water and proper sanitation, leading to disease and death.
World Thinking Day, held each year on 22 February, offers Girl Guides and Girl Scouts the opportunity to think about their colleagues and peers around the world. What’s more, it encourages them to use their creativity and leadership to help raise the funds our Movement needs to continue its important work.
