WAGGGS launches new HIV and AIDS project with UNAIDS

1 December 2006

WAGGGS has secured funding from UNAIDS for a new groundbreaking project to tackle HIV and AIDS worldwide. It will start in January 2007.

WAGGGS and UNAIDS will work together on a new HIV prevention training module based on best practice from different Member Organizations and other NGOs.

Alphonsine Kabagabo, Regional Director Africa Region and head of the project team says:

We are very happy to announce this new project for WAGGGS. Over the next year we will design and pilot an HIV prevention training module and materials for peer education for use in all Member Organizations. Best practice examples will help produce the training materials.

 The project’s objectives are:

  • To raise levels of knowledge about HIV prevention among girls and young women and help reduce infection rates
  • To increase WAGGGS’ capacity to train girls and young women to act as peer educators on HIV prevention and stigma reduction
  • To facilitate activities in geographic locations where budgetary restrictions have hitherto impeded such activities
