Take Action on AIDS Conference Day

From 22 to 27 July, at the XIX International AIDS Conference, Washington DC, USA will witness premier gathering of those working in the field of HIV, as well as policymakers, people living with HIV and others committed to ending the epidemic.

AIDS 2012 is expected to convene more than 20,000 delegates from nearly 200 countries, among these many young leaders. In the run-up to the Conference, about 200 young people are participating in the youth pre-conference from July 18 to 20. Yvonne Akoth, a young leader from the Kenya Girl Guide Association, who represented WAGGGS at the International AIDS Conference in 2010, will be participating in the Conference via online tools.

AIDS Conference pictureWAGGGS, its Member Organizations and Girl Guides and Girl Scouts have been long engaged in efforts to prevent dissemination of HIV and eliminate discrimination for those living with HIV and AIDS.

- Education for girls ranks among the most powerful tools for reducing vulnerability to HIV and AIDS.

Use the HIV/AIDS training toolkit to equip young leaders with the knowledge, experience and tools to support girls and young women in combating this disease.

Earn WAGGGS AIDS Badge, which helps girls and young women to learn about HIV/AIDS by doing a number of activities especially designed for the age ranges within Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting.

Once you complete it, why not try the GAT Badge curriculum. GAT focuses on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to end extreme poverty by 2015.

Of the estimated 33.4 million people living with HIV, 47 percent are women – nearly 16 million people – and half of all new infections occur among women. Women Deliver

Women are more vulnerable than men to HIV infection – for biological, economic and cultural reasons (such as discrimination, gender inequality and violence). WHO

- Check the World Thinking Activity pack 2009, the theme for which was MDG 6 - Stop the spread of HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases. This may give you ideas to organise your own activities.

- Use the WAGGGS position statement on HIV/AIDS to lobby your national governments, as well as the world leaders.
