New badge and website available ahead of the Olympic Games
3 May 2012
The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are drawing near. Show your sporting spirit by earning the new Games Go Global Badge and writing about your experiences on the new Global Conversations website.
The Olympic and Paralympic Games only happen once every four years. Two new resources from WAGGGS are now available to help Girl Guides and Girl Scouts take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about the history and culture of the Games.
Games Go Global badge
Games Go Global is a new sport-oriented WAGGGS badge that is available in Gold, Silver and Bronze forms and can be adapted to suit any age range.
By completing the badge activities, girls and young women will experience the excitement of Olympic sports, understand the physical, spiritual and cultural aspects of the Games, and learn about this year’s host country, Great Britain.
The Games Go Global activity pack is free to download, and Games Go Global badges are available to buy now in the WAGGGS online shop.
Global Conversations website

Global Conversations is a new blog website created by Girlguiding UK in partnership with WAGGGS. The website is designed to help Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to voice their opinions on topics related to the seven official Olympic and Paralympic Values.
They can do this by writing a blog entry for the website, by commenting on other blog entries, or by using the website as a basis for discussions in their own Girl Guide and Girl Scout meetings.
We want Global Conversations to be as global as the Olympic Games themselves – so, no matter what country you live in, we encourage you to write a blog entry and submit it to programme@girlguiding.org.uk with ‘Global Conversations blog’ as the subject heading. The blog covers a different theme each month – see below for the schedule.
Global Conversations scheduleThe website is based on the seven Olympic and Paralympic Values, and focuses on a different value each month. You can write about any way in which you have experienced the Olympic and Paralympic values through Girl Guiding or Girl Scouting. Perhaps you did an activity that was based around Equality, or maybe being a Girl Guide or Girl Scout has taught you the importance of Courage. Your blog should be around 300 words in length – include photographs if you can. Respect and Friendship have already been covered in March and April. The remaining values are:
Please note: Blog entries may be edited if they are too long, and submission of a blog entry does not guarantee that it will be published. |

This was a fabulous programme to use, I held an Olympic Overload Overnighter and we had an absolute blast. One of my favourite things was what the Girls came up with for their "Going for Gold" Speech. Just beautiful

Wonderful idea and badge program! My girls are excited about the games and this is a great way for them to participate in a global way. One question - the gold badges in english are sold out. Will there be more at a future date? Thanks!

I am very excited about this program. My Junior troop (Michigan-USA) is camping in August and it is going to be an Olympic weekend. We are going for the gold! Thank you so much for all the great ideas - we'll be doing more than the required number of activities for this badge because they are all so awesome.

Our Guide unit (1st Whitehaven Guides, UK) completed our Bronze level this evening. We did 'Be My Eyes' (great fun and quite a challenge for the blindfolded guides); 'Going for Gold Speech' and 'What have you done today to make you feel proud' which was really touching.
This is a great resource and the girls loved it! Thanks!!

This is a great idea. Thanks, UK Guides! I am going to ask my girls if they would host an mini-Olympic day for younger girls and use the activities in the GGG activity pack.

Excellent idea. Let's see how we as a unit (40th Orleans Girls Guides, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) can find to celebrate with other Guides around the world. Perhaps we can also send a Geocoin or Travel Bug to London.

I run a Brownie unit in Chester, UK. The olympic torch will be visiting our city, can't wait. Our Brownies took part in the last olympia challenge and hopefully they will want to take part in this one when I show them whats on offer. Thank you for putting it together.
