UN declares International Day of the Girl

20 December 2011

The United Nations General Assembly has officially approved the creation of International Day of the Girl, a special annual day to focus on girls' issues that has been promoted by WAGGGS.

WAGGGS has worked to promote International Day of the Girl with the European Parliamentary Forum (EPF) and development charity Plan International. The day has been declared as 11 October.

Girls celebrating

Special focus on girls' rights

“By designating 11 October as Day of the Girl we are all agreeing to put a special focus on the rights of girls throughout the world," said Plan Chief Executive Officer Nigel Chapman.

Plan stated that girls face double discrimination due to their gender and age, and are the most marginalised and discriminated group across the globe.

Girls are the future

"Girls are the future of the world and we definitely need a day dedicated to their issues," said Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee, a long standing supporter of Plan’s Day of the Girl campaign.

Last week, 393 Members of the European Parliament signed a declaration of support for the campaign.
