Girl Guides and Girl Scouts celebrate 100 years of changing lives
9 April 2010
10 April 2010, the 100th day of the year, marks the first Centenary Celebration Day for international Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting.
Millions of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world will celebrate 100 years of changing lives on this day. Activities are based on the centenary theme of ‘Plant’ and range from planting the seeds of change through community projects to holding debates about issues affecting girls and young women; from giant sleepovers in Sri Lanka to tree planting in Madagascar; from sending 100 messages from Romania to friends across the world to presenting recycled paper flowers to community leaders in Peru.
International centenary celebrations will focus on changing lives. An estimated 250 million lives have been changed so far through the Movement – through community action, advocacy and leadership development.
|
This is just the tip of the iceberg, and it is our vision to plant opportunities for millions more girls and young women to grow as responsible citizens through Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting Margaret Treloar, Chairman, World Board |
A number of new initiatives have been launched to help achieve this vision including the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) Global Girls Fund which is dedicated to empowering all girls and young women to reach their full potential and to take action to change the world for the better.
In addition, a major research study will be launched on the subject of young women and leadership as part of the global centenary celebrations. Linked to this, an essay competition, sponsored by language and cultural exchange organization Education First, on the theme of leadership and changing lives will be launched shortly.
The highlight of the three-year global centenary celebrations is the Young Women’s
World Forums, a series of events which take place each year for girls and young women. By the end of the three events, up to 750 young women from around the world will have had the opportunity to create a shared vision for a better world based on achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals. They will be empowered to make a difference in their own lives, in their communities and globally.

The Irish Girl Guides had a brilliant celebration day on April 10th. Many Units around the country planted trees and plants in honour of the WAGGGS Centenary. Not only that, but 400 girls and Leaders got together to celebrate the unveiling of our brand new uniform. The girls completed 100 challenges and watched a fashion show of our uniforms over the last 99 years. Below are some comments from the girls who attended the event:
