100 years of changing lives

With only a year to go before we launch the first of three Centenary Celebration Days we are busy planning activities around the theme of Plant. Download our new centenary celebration day pack and start planning for 10 April 2010.

World Board Chairman, Margaret Treloar, has sent a centenary message to all our members that you can read and download from this website. You can also watch the filmed message through YouTube:

Through Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting, the lives of millions of girls and young women have been transformed. In turn, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts have changed the lives of those around them, through community action, peer education and service to others. The centenary message celebrates the achievements of WAGGGS and its members for the last 100 years.

The centenary message incorporates the colours of WAGGGS’ five regions. Download the centenary message and guidelines on how to use it. Let us know how you use the message and send us copies of the materials where it appears.

Why three years?

1910 saw the first Girl Guide groups started in the UK by Robert and Agnes Baden-Powell. By 1912, Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting had been introduced in many countries around the world. We will celebrate the birth of our Movement over three years - from 2010 to 2012.

Many countries founded Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting between 1910 and 1912:

Founded in 1910: Canada, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom
Founded in 1911: Australia, Bangladesh (then part of India), India, Ireland, Netherlands, Pakistan (then part of India)
Founded in 1912: Cyprus, Italy, Norway, United States of America, Zimbabwe

So what’s going on?

Celebration Days

Each year, we want you to celebrate 100 years of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting on the 100th day of the year – 10 April. More information…

Young Women’s World Forum

Things are taking shape for the first ever Young Women’s World Forum which takes place from 19 to 24 October 2010 in the UK. The event will be hosted by Girlguiding UK in association with WAGGGS.

The forum will discuss issues that are relevant to young women from across the globe and will focus on the Millennium Development Goals. We also hope that the YWWF will help create a shared global vision for Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting. More information…

Help set the agenda

We want you to help set the agenda for the Young Women’s World Forum by taking part in a virtual survey which is now available online.

Centenary merchandise

Merchandise with the centenary message is available from our online shop. The 2010 centenary badge and the centenary badge deluxe will soon be available in the online shop for all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts who want to join in the celebrations.

The badges can be worn individually or together. Every year an additional badge will be on sale through the shop. These badges could be earned for example by participating in the annual Centenary Celebration Day.

More items will follow. Be the first ones to have them!

Centenary Ambassadors

Our centenary ambassadors are already busy helping us to shape our centenary activities. It’s still not too late to send in your nomination form to be an ambassador but don’t forget you have to go through your International or Chief Commissioner. Read more about what they are doing!

What else is going on?

The Europe Region will kick off its centenary celebrations with its third Eurolife event. eurolife.03 takes place from 28 December 2009 to 2 January 2010 in Sweden and Germany. Guides and Scouts will have the chance to take part in the same programme of activities in each centre and be connected to each other through the Internet. Find out more…

The Global Action Theme (GAT) girls worldwide say “together we can chance our world” looks at the Millennium Development Goals and runs throughout the centenary celebrations.

Don’t forget that throughout the centenary, World Thinking Day will look at a Millennium Development Goal each year starting with poverty and hunger in 2010 girls worldwide say “together we can end extreme po!erty and hunger.”

In 2011 World Thinking Day will focus on gender equality girls worldwide say “empowering girls will change our world”. And in 2012, World Thinking Day will focus on the environment girls worldwide say “we can save our planet”.

Soon we will launch a new, interactive micro site just for the centenary celebrations. Keep checking our pages!

Tell us about it!

Don’t forget to share with others what you are doing! You can use the space provided below or you can send us your stories and photos by email (centenary@wagggsworld.org).

Wonderful that Girl Guiding is 100 years old. Started as a Brownie and then went on to Guides and Rangers. Even though I have left Guiding, it has helped me through many tough times in my life, and still provides inspiration.
Once a guide... always a guide! Here's to the next 100 years!

I was also at the '87 event, A World of Understanding in NY. I am looking for anyone who attended that event, to up-date our roster and to organize a reunion in 2012. On Facebook there is A World Of Understanding group, that is where new information will be posted, and you can communicate with other participants.
Thanks,
Tanya Honton-Leddy
