100 years of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting

From 2010 to 2012, 10 million girls and young women are invited to join in the celebrations of the birth of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting.

So why are we celebrating for three years? These years mark the 100th birthday of Girl Guiding, which was founded in the UK in 1910, and the 100th birthday of Girls Scouting, which was founded in the USA in 1912. Many more countries founded Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting between 1910 and 1912:
Founded in 1910: Canada, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom
Founded in 1911: Australia, Bangladesh (then part of India), India, Ireland, Netherlands, Pakistan (then part of India)
Founded in 1912: Cyprus, Italy, Norway, United States of America, Zimbabwe
During the three year period from 2010-2012, all of WAGGGS’ activities will come under the banner of the centenary theme.

The one word that I believe should symbolize guiding/scouting is character. I don't understand why it's missing from the list of words and phrases. I hope as Girl Scouts strives to stay modern and relevant it doesn't forget to put character first. No matter your religion, political affiliations, culture, etc, I think we can all agree on character is essential to a fulfilling life and making a positive difference in our communities.

Girlguiding has provided both me and my family with much love and support during hard times and we in turn give the girls the support, love and help they need as they grow. I hope that what the girls learn in my unit will set them up for the rest of their life - which is what I believe my Guiders did for me all those years ago.

I was never a Brownie as I spent 3 years on various waiting lists after moving house twice in that 3 years. As soon as I was old enough I joined Guides and have never left. As the child of a military family who moved every few years, and who then joined the Forces myself, Guiding has been one of the few constants in my life. Wherever I was living I could find like minded people and continue with a long running adventure. Guiding has introduced me to many experiences and challenges and certainly helped me to become a more outgoing person than the shy little 10 year old I once was. I now love being a leader and seeing the girls of today discover new things about themselves through friendship, challenge and adventures. Long may this continue.

I became a Girl Scout in First Grade and went all the way through High School and Bridged to Adults, earning both my Silver and Gold Awards along the way. As an adult I have been an assistant leader and leader to five different troops, I have also been a member of the Denver, CO Gold Award Committee. I have throughly enjoyed all of my experiences in Girl Scouting. The memories I have gained from going to camp, attending a wider opportunity in South Carolina and all of the people I have met, has enriched my life beyond belief. I would love to someday work for the Girl Scouting organization and discover some way to get older girls to continue in Scouts instead of dropping out in Juniors. There is so much more older girls can experience. I would also like for the Gold Award to get more Recognition.

I have been a Scout for ten years.I was a little girl when I came in organization... and after this I have started a new life. Scouting is my whole of life. This is the biggest experience. This is a big family with members, who have different cultures, different languages, but they can understand each other, because they know the language of Scouting... The most big and unforgetable experience was at Sangam, World Centre, I met and made so many friends... But I miss one of them too much, this is the Kenyan participants. She is the greatest person I have ever met... In Sangam everyone was able to share their expereinces, we had a time to told eachother about our countries and about our organisations... And everyone had a feeling that we had seen whole world with different Associations, but all of them are members of big family, which is called by SCOUTING. In our big family I have established my leadership skills. Everyone of my good friends are members of Girl Scouts Association in Georgia. We have diferent lives, but Scouting is very important for us... For me our World Association is the strongest in a Whole world and I hope that it will continue to grow and very soon 10 million girls voice will heard as 20 millon girls voice! I can't imagine my life without Scouting...

My daughter has been in Girl Scouts for five years now. It's her favorite outside the home activity. Our troop thinks even more girls should experience girl scouting. They'd like to invite visitors to see what it is all about. Once they see for themselves, they may want to join in the fun.

I am convinced that Guiding is an not only a Movement but an expereince that challenges and changes lives. Through Guiding I have met and made so many friends which I will never ever take them for granted. One of my greatest expereinces is while I was at Sangam, World Centre, I met and made so many friends and each of them made an impact in my life in a different way. Another beautiful thing that from my experience there we were able to share different expereinces about our different countries thus dealing with the prejudice and stereotypes that are formed in our mind about other ccountries as a result of what we get from the media. In guding, my leadership skills have been established and from this for me has really boosted my esteem. My hope and prayer is that guding will continue to be the strongest movement advocating for issues affecting girls and women and I urge each member to be committed in their different capacities in order for us to realize a common goal.
