Juliette Low Seminar 2009

A group of 65 young women from 62 countries gathered in Nairobi, Kenya, from 23 to 29 August for the Juliette Low Seminar (JLS) 2009. For the first time ever, the JLS was held in the Africa Region.
With ‘A safari… in leadership’ as the theme, activities included exploring the savannah and learning some leadership traits from the Big 5 (lion, buffalo, rhino, elephant and leopard). The young women also took part in the community development projects spearheaded by the Kenya Girl Guides Association (KGGA).
Alphonsine Kabagabo, Regional director of the Africa Region, said of the event: “It is a great honour for the KGGA and the Africa Region to host such an important event. More than 20 girls from our region are participating and enhancing their leadership skills. We welcome young women from all over the world to experience the Kenya and Africa Region hospitality."
A challenging programme
Taking inspiration from Kenya - a country famous for safaris - the organizers designed an exciting and challenging programme.
The first part of the progamme focussed on ‘personal development’, ‘me as a leader’ and ‘the leader within themselves’ as well as leadership theories and practices. Participants also learned about the value of advocacy, taking into consideration the WAGGGS Global Action Theme (GAT) when they visited local projects.
The remaining part of the programme explored diversity, with workshops aimed at enhancing leadership development and setting objectives for action plans that participants are now implementing in their own countries.
