World Thinking Day 2012 - we can save our planet

World Thinking Day 2012 will be focussing on UN Millennium Goal 7 - environmental sustainability. WAGGGS will launch the global campaign 'we can save our planet' and the World Thinking Day activities pack in August 2011 on the World Thinking Day website.

Pathways to leadership- Day 3WAGGGS had a huge advocacy success at the UN Climate Change Conference COP 16 in Cancun, Mexico in December 2010. Together with other youth organizations we advocated successfully for greater support for Climate Change education, especially non-formal education and education for girls and young women. You can replicate this success in your country using the Guidelines on national advocacy action for Climate Change education.

PLANT_LOGO_English.gifWAGGGS supports the UNEP campaign ’Plant for the Planet’ which was launched by WAGGGS Global Citizenship Awardee Wangari Maahtai. The campaign aims to plant one billion trees around the world. Why don’t you help and plant some with your Guiding sisters?

Go online to find a number of easy-to-use campaign materials on the United Nations World Environment Day website like the daily ‘Do Something’ tips. These are useful ideas on how to easily green your daily routine.

Concerned about global climate change? You can do something! The Young Voices on Climate Change movies feature inspiring young people, including a Girl Scout troop, and give you the opportunity to let your voice be heard.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and WAGGGS invite Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world to help save the planet. To support your projects you can apply for a small grant up to 250 USD. The projects can be related to adaptation (helping people cope with climate change) or mitigation (preventing further CO2 emissions).

Biodiversity Art competition -Winner

 

On World Environment Day 2010 WAGGGS called all members to action to celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity.

 

 

Unite for Climate- logoCatherine Nyambala, WAGGGS UN team co-ordinator in Nairobi, and Pat Scharlin, WAGGGS UN team member in New York, became part of the coordination group on Unite4Climate, a climate change campaign organized by UNEP and UNICEF. Unite4Climate will offer an internet platform for youth working on environmental issues and other activities.
