WAGGGS at the Commission on the Status of Women

54 CSW- delegatesSix delegates are representing the World Association of Girl Guides and Girls at the 54th session of the Commission on the Status of Women: Rachel Harris (New Zealand), Elizabeth Ann Fricker (UK), Nefeli Themeli (Greece), Susanna Michele Matters (Australia), María José Proaño Ordonez (Ecuador) and I-Ling Lin (Taiwan)

Delegates will be supported by WAGGGS UN team members Anita Thomas, Diane Paravazian, Pat Scharlin, Mary-Jane Meconi, Francesca Socolick and 10 Girl Scouts from Connecticut and Vermont.

The inequality of girls and young women leads to their being disproportionately burdened by many of the issues affecting humankind. Yet we know that policies, programmes and investments made in girls have the greatest return, as girls magnify the effect throughout their communities. Despite the recognition of inequality, despite the evidence that empowering girls is good for everyone, and despite the promises and commitments made by governments over the decades, many girls remain marginalised, unvalued, exploited and at risk. Direct investment in girls is miniscule and development policies remain focused on technical, technological and economic solutions.

The WAGGGS delegation will be lobbying to change this. They will approach country delegations at the CSW and work with UN agencies, other NGOs, NGO committees and caucuses to make sure the girl child is the centre of attention when deciding policies and programmes.

Reviewing the Beijing Declaration

This year the Commission on the Status of Women will undertake a fifteen-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly.

The Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action was signed in 1995 and states in Section L that ‘all barriers must be eliminated to enable girls without exception to develop their full potential and skills through equal access to education and training, nutrition, physical and mental health care and related information.’

Emphasis will be placed on the sharing of experiences and good practices with a view to overcoming obstacles and challenges, including those related to the Millennium Development Goals.

Delegates in action

WAGGGS has published a written statement on the main theme for this year, emphasizing that the girl child must be at the centre of efforts to implement the Beijing Platform for Action. You can download the full document.

In addition, WAGGGS will run a panel on non-formal education ‘A century of empowering girls through non-formal education’ on 4 March. We will share with guests and experts the experience and expertise on how to help girls and young women to develop their fullest potential.

Don’t miss the daily updates the participants post on the left hand side menu and send them a message.

I believe that was is being done right now by this delegation in the United Nations is something really important. I do know that every Girl Guide and Girl Sout understands the importance of women and girls in society but still i think that the leadership of women does not receive the recognition that it should. I feel extremely proud to be represented by this delegation and I know that they will do an excelent job!

Dear WAGGGS Delegates
Just read over the updates on the website and from Rebecca and all the great work you are doing there on our behalf. It is fantastic that you are gaining such a high profile for us at the CSW that is reviewing what has been achieved under the Platform for Action, and there you are as GG and GS IN ACTION, creating spaces, stating what WAGGGS is doing and lobbying for Nation States to do more, so that more opportunities are created for more girs around the world!! Well Done and keep up the great work!!

Korana - 7 March 2010 - 2.32PM (GMT)
