Day 5 - 4th March

Nefeli speaks at the plenary session

CSW delegate- Nefeli Themeli

WAGGGS delegate Nefeli Themeli was chosen to deliver a declaration on behalf of the European Youth Forum and two of its members, WAGGGS and the Swiss National Youth Council to the plenary session of the Commission.

She spoke on the importance of young women in decision-making and the vital role of education, especially non-formal education, in raising awareness of young men and women on sexual and reproductive health. Nefeli particularly commented on the areas of the Beijing Platform of Action which lack progress, including gender-based stereotypes in education and training, health and sex education and gender segregation in many employment sectors.

I was called to speak on behalf the European Youth forum at the CSW. When are given the authorization to talk you aren't sure if you will actually talk, until the chair of the CSW calls you to speak. When I heard calling me, my heart was biting really fast and yet I knew that I had to remain calm, I had to speak in order to be heard and understood. I finished the oral intervention by asking the panelist: "What about youth?

It should be once more highlighted that an enhanced synergy among different policy areas, and in particular those of equality, non-discrimination and youth, is needed in order to achieve equality between young women and young men and to effectively implement the actions agreed upon in Beijing focusing on girls and young women. It was an amazing opportunity and I hope I have the opportunity to do it again!
