Day 5 by Nomusa Taylor-Dube
Tuesday, 3 March 2009
Tuesday started off bright and early at the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Breakfast (pictured right). It was great to meet and greet WAGGGS members from all over the world. Chairman of the World Board Margaret Treloar, Chief Executive Mary Mc Phail, World Board member Zahara Mavani and the young delegate Sheila Waithera Wangui from Kenya gave very strong presentations at the breakfast about Guiding and how WAGGGS is trying to tackle HIV and AIDS worldwide.
After the breakfast we quickly hurried to the Africa caucus where we got an incite in both English and French as to what best practices are currently in place and what policy changes still need to be made, in regards to HIV and AIDS in the context of care giving.
The highlight of my day today, was my panel event hosted by the International Women’s Alliance and the Food and Agricultural Organization. I gave a speech about my volunteer experiences with rural women in northern Ghana living with HIV and AIDS. The speech was very well received by the audience, which is very encouraging.
Overall, it was a great day and I am happy to be part of this lucky young group of women representing WAGGGS at the 53rd United Nations Commission the Status of Women.

Dear Nomusa,
Thank you for taking part in this panel to advocate gender equality and empowerment of rural women, who make significant contributions to food security, but rarely own the land and resources.
Greetings from Rome,
WAGGGS representatives at FAO
