Commission on the Status of Women- 53rd session

A WAGGGS delegation attended the 53rd Commission on the Status of Women from 2 to 13 March 2009 at UN headquarters in New York. The delegation included WAGGGS World Board Chairman, Margaret Treloar and Chief Executive Mary Mc Phail, World Board member Zahara Mavani, UN team New York and the young delegates: Sheila Waithera Wangui and Miriam Oluoch Otieno from Kenya, Misozi Belessings Kumwenda from Zambia, Vanessa Macedo Fiuza from Brazil and Nomusa Lauren Taylor-Dube from Canada, which are funded by Yvonne Hebert Fund, GSUSA, Soroptimist International, Girl Guides of Canada/Guides du Canada, and WAGGGS.

CSW gave our young delegates the opportunity to influence the issues they care about and be the voice of young women.

WAGGGS submitted a written statement on the main theme for this year: ‘The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS’. The review theme will be: ‘Equal participation of women and men in decision-making processes at all levels’ (from 2005).
