10 million people called leaders to seal a deal
On the opening day of the Copenhagen summit, TckTckTck –Time for Climate justice campaign- delivered its petition which more than 10 million people have signed, calling for world leaders to seal a fair, ambitious and binding climate deal at the talks. Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world have contributed to the campaign.
The tck tck tck petition, with over 10 million global pledges for a fair, ambitious and binding agreement was delivered to UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer and Danish Climate Minister and the President of COP15 Connie Hedegaard.
24-year-old Leah Wickman from Fiji, spoke on behalf of the 15 young people who presented the petition:
I am relying on the decision makers to sign a deal that will mean that my children inherit a safe world. All the hopes and dreams of my generation rest on Copenhagen.
The youth representatives handed over a small construction of Danish LEGO blocks to Mr de Boer and Ms Hedegaard to ask them to foster the political will required at the talks to get the deal done.
Professor Wangari Maathai, who received WAGGGS World Citizenship award in 2007, delivered a speech on behalf of civil society.
The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is a partner with the tck tck tck – Time for Climate Justice campaign, which tries to ensure that people everywhere are free from suffering due to climate change.
You can watch the message that WAGGGS World Board Chair Margaret Treloar recorded, encouraging Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world to join the tck tck tck campaign to fight climate change.
The Scout Council of Guides and Scouts of Finland became climate allies too and recorded a message.
